positive space appears to be occupied or filled, in contrast to negative space which appears to be empty or unoccupied. This can be looked at in terms of “figure” or positive space, and “ground” or negative space. Ways that this can be achieved are through subtractive or additive sculpture techniques. A “figure-ground reversal” is when there is balance between positive and negative space such that there is a flip between the figure and the ground. An example of this would be the Yin-Yang image.
